One of the most important responsibilities of the Editor-in-Chief of a student newspaper is appointing editorial, advertising, circulation, and promotion staff. Generally, the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Advisor are the central figures in the mediating relationship between the students of a school and the news media. The Media and Publications Director is a good place to start for guidance and advice. This person will be responsible for establishing the organization’s budget, managing the student publications’ budget, and developing management techniques for the aforementioned staff.
Aside from appointing the right people for the job, the editor-in-chief also has to be ready for the big reveal. Whether it’s an article on the big game or an announcement of the new student newspaper’s inaugural issue, the Editor-in-Chief has to deliver. Another requisite is proper training. Fortunately, the Media and Publications Office offers its own student-centric training program. Not only does this program train students in basic journalism, it also provides a forum for sharing news stories and other media-related discoveries. Additionally, the Office provides a code of advertising acceptability to help ensure the quality of the media being circulated. Having said that, this ain’t a walk in the park, and there are bound to be teething problems. Regardless, the student newspapers of the future will continue to thrive and grow.
Financial dependence on the Students’ Union
For most students, their main source of income is student finance. However, research suggests that this type of dependency can be harmful to mental health. As a result, students are becoming increasingly dependent on their parents for financial support. This can have a negative impact on their academic performance and mental well-being.
